It's
about time I wrote my 'Why I Like SNIVELY' thing. So yes, here it is: WHY I,
Ali, LIKE SNIVELY.
1. He's
cute. He has those big eyes, and he always looks so bored and unenthused, and
he can look so damn innocent, even when he's thinking evil little thoughts. And
gah, those stupid eyes get me all the time! And when he pouts or tries to look
evil, it's so freaking cute. And he's so tiny and skinny. But then he'll do
something like throw Antoine onto the ground.
2. His
attitude. He's so odd. He's so completely afraid of his uncle and yet so
arrogant around the Freedom Fighters, even if he's scared (like when Sonic and
Tails catch him in "Drood Henge") He's afraid of Sonic, but he still
has the gall to say: "the little twerp will never figure it out" in
regard to Tails. He can be quite amusing at times: when he mutters stuff, the
whole 'cooking wit Antoine' scene, the way he tries to emulate his Uncle in
"No Brainer" and the way he clearly gets enjoyment out of watching
his Uncle squirm and get humiliated in "the Void" He laughs so hard
he falls out of his chair!
3. I
can relate to him. He has this passive aggressive side to him. He knows he's
injusticed, he knows that he's trapped in a life he hates (He even says:
"I hate my life" in several episodes) He's a coward who's afraid to
change, and afraid to feel because he knows if he breaks out of the numbness
he's accustomed to, he'll feel even more pain. He's afraid to trust other
people and he's afraid to let THEM trust him, for fear of disappointing their
expectations. He wants to be happy and be respected...yes, he has delusions of
being Supreme Leader and such, but underneath that, he just wants the basic
respect every human deserves. I can relate to his cowardice, and his fear, and
his passiveness and his refusal to change.
4. He's
a very complex and multi-faceted character. I love how versatile he is. Snively
is a character, because of his demeanor, he can bend in all different
directions. He can go towards the dark side, retreat further into his tortured
self and become quite evil and twisted...and part of him would enjoy it, too!
But, in other circumstances, he also has the ability to change and redeem
himself, to try to heal, and tred the path of light. And with his character, if
these situations are written properly they both ARE plausible! It's even
possible to have him do BOTH! His hatred of his Uncle can lead him towards
mutiny and murder, like he did in my story "Following Tributaries".
That same fear and hatred can trap him and make him do whatever his uncle says,
such as roboticizing his best friend in Ealain's version of SatAM. And these
are also both plausible storylines!
5. His
voice. No, really! Can you picture Snively with any other voice than the one
Charlie Adler gave him? That rasping nasal whine he has? The way he can hiss
suddenly, demonically, like at the end of the "Doomsday Project" or
in "Blast to the Past 2" where he lost his hair? The way his voice
hitches up higher in pitch when he talks to his Uncle, babbling nervously and
quick, whimpering and pleading? And then, for contrast, the way his voice drops
in octaves when he mutters something about his uncle, or the arrogant edge it
takes when he talks to the Freedom Fighters? The voice is just perfect for the
character.
It's
not just his speaking voice I like, but his body language. I noticed a lot of
subtle things in the show. Whenever Robotnik makes a sudden motion, especially
if he raises his fist, Snively cringes away, or his eyes widen. He also does
these weird begging gestures, such as clutching his hands together and holding
them out towards Robotnik, like he's praying for his Uncle to forgive him. O.o
There are several subtle things he does body-language-wise and for me, that
just makes his character seem more 'real.'
6. I
think that's the gist of it, as well. The fact that his character seems so REAL
to me. I understand, of course, that Snively is not a REAL person, but he very
well COULD be. His emotions seem real enough to be touched, his reactions make
sense, even his actions, whether or not you agree with them, are
understandable. It's easy to say Snively is a coward, but if you look, you can
see justification for him being a coward. Through writing many fanfictions and
drawing him quite a bit, I feel almost intimately connected with the character,
as if he were a part of me, because he just comes across as so REAL, like I
know him completely, all the way down to the soul. It could be the fact that I
can relate to his character, being that I share a lot of traits with him.
To end
this silly fan-girl babbling ^^:
I've
come to be used to the Sniv featuring in my life. I continue to draw and write
his character. His angst, his despair inspire me...and his capacity, despite
his tortured life, to still love, to still overcome things, to still maybe have
a chance, have a hope...this inspires me. I don't think I could ever run out of
ideas for prose and pictures of him, because he represents so much in me and so
much in my life. He is my dark muse, and I WUV HIM! :D
